SE Sorocabana 1 x 7 Corinthians, in Round 18 of the Campeonato Paulista de Futebol Feminino

I said I’d keep you posted about our star-studded women’s team, and I’m a man of my word. Corinthians advanced to the second stage of the state league with this 7-1 victory in Sorocaba. Cristiane didn’t score this time, but her teammate on the seleção, Fabiana Baiana, found the back of the net. The other six goals came from Nildinha (2), Karina (2), Fabiane, and Paula Santos.

This round ends the first group stage, and you can see the final tables here. Corinthians finished second in Group 2, three points behind Santos.

In the next stage, we’re in a group with Botucatu FC, São Bernardo FC, and Prefeitura de Franca. The other group is Santos, América FC/Juventude, Saad EC, and São José EC. The top two from each group will go through to semi-finals, then finals.

Given the results so far, it looks like Corinthians and Santos might win their groups and face off in the final. I’m always up for a clássico… Vamos fritar o Peixe, garotas do Timão!

 • Other news — Looks like they’re after another player from the national team: the goalkeeper Bárbara. And they’re still talking about Marta, which sounds pretty unlikely, although she is an admitted Corinthians fanatic.
